If you’re seeing spots on your face, it’s time to stop the embarrassment and cure your troublesome complexion. Whether it’s acne, brown spots or some kind of funky 3rd world disease, there are plenty of ways to clear up your skin overnight instead of waiting days or weeks that traditional treatments call for.

First, you need to figure out what’s causing your unsightly face. Take a deep breath and grab a magnifying mirror to really get up-close and personal with your skin. You probably won’t want to do this near mealtime and before you begin, know that everyone has big pores and nasty skin when it’s magnified 10 times over.

If the problem is acne

If the spots on your face are acne, they’ll appear red and irritated. They may have a white top. Acne can be big or small and it can occur anywhere on your face, neck, back or other body parts – though the oily zone on the face is the most common area for pimples to take residence.

Acne is caused by pores getting clogged with grease, dirt, cosmetics or other small particles. Those clogged pores then become infected and before you know it you’ve got a zit the size of Texas sprouting off your face. It’s important to know that stress, sweating and other things can cause your body to produce more pore-clogging substances which will aggravate acne, so don’t be surprised when you suddenly have a conjoined twin popping out of your chin right before a big date.

Now that you know why acne forms, you can do something to fight it. There are a myriad of old wives tales regarding ways to clear up your face. Before you go smearing toothpaste on your nose and making matters worse, try a simple over-the-counter solution. There are a number of overnight pimple fixers or you can take an old fashioned approach and clean the pore out with rubbing alcohol. Whatever you choose, take your time and make sure you really clean the spot. You may want to clean it twice before hitting the sheets to make sure everything is really out. While you’re at it, take a minute to look over the rest of your face and see if you have any other epic pimples in the making and treat those too.

Now drink a couple of glasses of water and go to bed. The extra water will help your body flush out toxins and cleanse the skin. Staying hydrated can help prevent acne in the first place. Once you wake up pimple-free and looking fresh, you’ll want to continue with a healthy skin care regimen consisting of regular face cleanings and plenty of water.

If the problem is dark spots

Dark spots can be caused by a number of medical conditions as well as tanning. The spots are actually just areas where there is a heavier distribution of melanin. While the spots aren’t dangerous or irritating, many people find them to be undesirable and look for ways to get rid of them.

Fixing dark spots can be done with a little help from a few ingredients you probably have in your fridge. Dig up some plain yogurt (though strawberry might smell better!) and give it a thorough smear across your face. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even mix the yogurt with 2 tablespoons of oatmeal and a teaspoon of lime juice. Apply the yogurt and let it sit for 20 minutes then rinse thoroughly. While your spots won’t disappear overnight, they will improve. Do this every day for a few months and watch your spots virtually disappear.

If the problem is something else

For any unexplained spot, pock or pustule, it’s probably a good idea to head to the doctor. While many unexplained facial rashes are nothing, it’s good to have a health professional give you a clean bill of health rather than taking a chance. Chances are that you’re simply reacting to something in your environment like a perfume or cosmetic product and stopping use of the irritant will clear up your skin.
